The Pitch
With one of the best playing surfaces in Europe, a fifty two thousand all seater stadium, corporate hospitality boxes, five star grading by UEFA, the National Hall of Fame and the head quarter offices of the SFA …………… Hampden Park is situated in Glasgow.
St Combs, however, play on a pitch known locally as “the pitch.” Strategically positioned overlooking the North Sea for maximum exposure to the elements, the local players are encouraged from a very early age “to get the ball down and play” – partly because the locals are great believers in “the beautiful game” - but, just as importantly, because they do not want to spend half the game retrieving the ball from the dunes.
Any casual passing observer who may hear a supporter shake his head and remark “8 today” may be mistaken in thinking that they are overhearing a comment on the performance of some midfield player when, in fact, it will most likely be a reference to Gale Force 8.
“The pitch” is also strategically positioned close to “The Duck” (The Tufted Duck Hotel) where supporters can partake of half time and after match refreshments - which, dependent on the first half performance, can end up being the same thing for some.
